Meet our Superintendent

  • Mr. Jonathan Cleaver

    Superintendent, Lehighton Area School District


         Mr. Cleaver is the Superintendent at Lehighton Area School District.  He was first employed at Berwick as a Special Education Teacher in 1999.  Mr. Cleaver moved on to the Dean of Students position at the High School in 2004 before becoming Acting Assistant Principal at the Berwick Area High School in 2005, Assistant Principal in 2006, and Principal in the summer of 2008.  In December of 2010, Mr. Cleaver became Lehighton Area School District's Coordinator of Curriculum, Instruction, and Grants.  On July 1, 2012, he was elected as the Superintendent.

    Since being hired as Superintendent on July 1, 2012, Mr. Cleaver has overseen:

    • The development and implementation of a district-wide STEAM Program for grades K-12
    • District awarded National STEM+ Academy of the Year by the National Education Foundation

    • Collaborative with Lehigh Carbon County Community College for High School Scholars Program

    • The development of the Lehighton Area Virtual Academy (LAVA), which has saved the district on average $150,000 per year in cyber/charter payments

    • Assisted in the development of the Lehighton Education Athletic Foundation (LEAF)

    • A complete renovation of the high school program and building (estimated $11.5 million)

    • A complete renovation of the middle school program and building (estimated 15.5 million)

    • An ESCO project as part of the middle and high school building projects that is estimated to save the district over $80,000 in energy saving per year

    • The building of a new Multi-purpose Stadium (estimated 6.7 million)

    • The building of a new K-5 elementary building that will house all district elementary students (estimated 34 million)

    • The ACE Grant program which was awarded to the district in the amount of approximately 4 million dollars that was put toward the cost of the district-wide building projects

    • The QZAB Grant program which allowed the district to take out interest free bond loans that will save the district over 5 million dollars for the life of the bonds

    Mr. Cleaver serves or has served:

    • On the LEAF Board as “Ex Officio” member
    • On the Business & Education Board for Carbon Chamber and Economic Development

    • As Superintendent of Record for the Carbon County Technical Institute

    • Schuylkill/Carbon/Luzerne Region STEM Ecosystem Board of Directors

    • Committee to improve Downtown Lehighton

    • Shine After School Program Board of Directors 

    • As a member of Lehigh University School Study Council (LUSSC)


         Mr. Cleaver was born and raised in Berwick and graduated from Berwick High School in 1994.  He attended Mansfield University and graduated in December of 1999 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education.  He also holds a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Wilkes University as well as a K-12 Principal Certification from Wilkes.  Mr. Cleaver received his Superintendent’s Letter of Eligibility from Marywood University in 2009.


         He and his wife Tanya reside in Berwick with their three sons, Blane, Bryce and Brayden.
